The Founder

William Harrah was the founder of Harrah’s Reno. He opened his very first bingo house in October of 1937, but by December of the same year, it had closed down again. Harrah worked hard to re-open his casino and named it Heart Tango. Slowly but surely, it started to pick up business. Mr Harrah, being a smart, quick-witted businessman, gradually starting securing the businesses around Heart Tango.

By 1968, he had also purchased the Reno Grand Hotel. He then sourced the services of Martin Stern Jnr, a renowned architect at the time. He commissioned a hotel tower with no less than 24 storeys to be built. By 1969, this hotel tower was opened to the public. Over the next few years, what is now known as Harrah’s Reno continued to grow in popularity. So much so, that in 1981, another tower consisting of 100 rooms was added to the initial hotel.

New Additions

By the time the 1990s rolled around, Harrah’s Reno had become the ideal place to host big name acts, as it was easy to get to and already attracted quite a large audience. As a result, the Headliner Room was built. This is where some of the biggest acts in show business at the time performed to sold out audiences. These acts included the likes of Joan Rivers, who performed in Sammy’s Showroom, so named after one of the world’s most beloved performers, Sammy Davis Jnr.

The Casino

Of course, a resort in Reno would not be complete without an impressive casino to accompany it. Harrah’s Reno, to this day, boasts one of the most impressive casinos in the Nevada region.
